Katherine dips her (rear bicycle) wheel in the (Pacific Ocean) water before cycling away from San Diego. |
A perfect day. Breakfast was oatmeal, and not-healthy zucchini carrot bread. Such excitement riding in a line to Ocean Beach where we dipped our back tires in the Pacific. Many well wishers there to send us off. The Pacific Coast Region of the WOCN turned out by the numbers, plus dear old friends and former colleague from the 1970s and Lois Corti from Orange County.
We started at 9:15 under overcast skies at 59 degrees. Getting out of San Diego, we cycled through traffic many people my age don't drive in! We cycled two long climbs in the course of the 34.5 miles. At the end, there was a three-and-a-half-mile climb with grades of five to eight percent. Marge and I did it very well. We were not the first ones in, but we certainly weren't the last.
Lunch was a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and two fig newtons. I consumed lots of water, electrolyte drink, Endurolytes regularly and Hammer Gel. I felt very strong all day. We finished at 2:20. The temperature was 73 degrees & the sun was shining brightly.
Dinner was gourmet: Steel head trout, two salads and new potatoes. Cheesecake for dessert, which I didn't eat. Each evening, the chef cooks in the parking lot, we eat on our laps seated in plastic chairs. After, dinner we had a map meeting for the route to Jacumba tomorrow.
57 days & 3,065.5 miles to go!
SO EXCITING!! KEEP US UPDATED AND GOOD LUCK!!!
